Who We Are

...we are enlightening youths to take action, empowering youths to create solutions and we are creating value from waste...

U-recycle Initiative Africa is a registered (CAC/IT/NO 157391) youth-led, non-profit organisation committed to advancing circular economy, environmental sustainability, and climate action across Africa.

We invest our time and resources into educating schools and communities about environmental sustainability and proffer deep-rooted solutions to make the reduction, recovering, repurposing and recycling of waste more efficient and pervasive across schools and communities in Africa. We are focused on promoting a circular economy through advocating for sustainable and effective policies, facilities and systems to eliminate the huge disastrous impact of plastic waste on the environment.

Our projects are focused on enlightening youths to take action, empowering youths to create solutions to combat plastic pollution, and creating value from waste through repurposing and recycling strategies.

U-recycle Initiative’s efforts are geared towards mitigating plastic pollution across Africa and protecting oceans, vulnerable communities, the planet, biodiversity, and humans from the perils of the plastic pollution crisis.

Our strategies primarily involve advancing environmental education, influencing behavioral change, empowering youth, and creating value from waste.

U-recycle Initiative was established in September 2018 and ever since then we have been committed to proffering solutions to the issue of pollution.

As of January 2022, we have implemented over 36 projects that have enlightened and engaged over 7100 people in 11 African countries namely: Nigeria, Namibia, Rwanda, Gambia, Kenya,  Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Zambia, Africa, Madagascar and Uganda.

Here is a summary of our impact over the past 2-3 years.

-We have organized trainings to empower youths with the knowledge and skills required to design and implement grassroots solutions focused on combating plastic pollution.

-We have hosted environmental education outreach, school workshops and distributed informative posters to high school students across Nigeria to increase their knowledge on practical ways they can mitigate plastic pollution.

-We have organized city events and awareness walks involving schools, universities and the public.

-We launched a novel continental litter cleanup challenge engaging hundreds of youths across Africa

– We are currently running a pilot project at a high school to promote recycling through uniquely designed recycling bins in order to prevent recyclable waste from being dumped in landfills, waterways or the ocean.

-Also, We are currently working with National Geographic Society’s support to scale our work to reach thousands of high-school students across six states in Nigeria through our recently launched African Youth for Environment Fellowship (AY4E).

-On or before November 2021, we plan to construct Eco-toilets for Akodo, a marginalized coastal community in Lagos, Nigeria. The project is focused on mitigating marine plastic pollution and open defecation in that community

In conclusion, we believe that despite the myriad of socio-economic challenges in Africa, Africans need to prioritize tackling environmental injustice/issues because nature is at the core of human’s survival. The survival of humans, plants and animals depend on the livability of our planet which is greatly threatened by plastic pollution and Climate Change
